The design brief for An Undeveloped Sound required a colossal trivision billboard to be central to the stage picture. Initially this sign was to be of a practical construction, but we opted to use video instead. As such, the goal was for this sign to be realistic and seen more as a background set piece.

We designed the billboard fully in TouchDesigner. The advantages of taking a parametric approach to modelling this sign were three-fold. First, The 'Sweet Spot' for the audience could be adjusted after the fact, allowing me to achieve a proper trompe-l'oeil effect. Second, because the 3D model was lit virtually, we could integrate the lighting of the sign into the lighting of the rest of the stage picture. This meant that the sign stayed balanced within the stage picture, and adapted to the changing lighting conditions on stage, adding to the reality of the object. Third, because the rotation of the slats was adaptable, it was possible to treat the billboard's appearance and character to add to emotional buttons on stage, or to sync up with Loscil's compositions.
